My Alaskan Bear Hunt with EOTech
April 22, 2014I was almost finished packing the night before I was to leave for Prince of Wales (POW) island, Alaska, for a black bear and Sitka deer hunt when I got the call. The bureau of ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms) in Anchorage had confiscated my gun case that I sent via UPS several days earlier because they scanned it and found an aerosol can in it! Gun Scrubber, which I have shipped countless times before without issue. They demanded the lock combinations so they wouldn’t cut them. They removed the can, but now they could not ship the gun …
Chemo Anniversary
April 18, 2014Two years ago today I started initial chemotherapy for stage 4 cancer. I remember the apprehension with the first needle going in. I'm the last man standing. I'm more than a year over my expiration date. Everyone I was in the hospital with for the same but lesser stage cancer is long gone. I am a poster boy for my doctors.
2012 was spent trying to keep breathing. 24 hour chemo and radiation twice a day for throat cancer. I came out of it with plenty of baggage, but I'm still here, thanks to God, the incredible doctors and nurses …
Glass More Important than Gun, NRA for Kids, and Another Crashed Scooter
April 7, 2014I was asked by a friend of a friend to mount a scope on his new gun. He's a new shooter, and contacted one of our guys in Product Intelligence about what glass to put on his Mossberg 4×4. Dmitry owns the gun, and he was one of the smart ones regarding what to spend on what kind of optics. The Mouseburger isn't a high end gun, and in fact is quite entry level. No matter, all the new price point guns will be reliable and shoot straight enough for hunting purposes. Most will shoot better than higher end guns …
Keith Warren NEMO Javelinas, Great Equipment, and Cactus Whiskey
March 21, 2014Took a little jaunt last week to visit Keith Warren in Texas to film some spots for his "High Road" TV show. He just got one of the awesome new NEMO semiautos in .300 Winchester, and called me up to help him choose appropriate accessories for it. NEMO were the first folks to make the AR platform work with this big cartridge. Superbly built gun, not cheap, designed for ultra long range targets. I installed an outstanding KFS Sierra 7 bipod. One of the great features of this Versapod sister company's products is …
Why Poontang, Gobblers, and Dogs Don’t Mix
March 11, 2014Spring turkey hunting has been a passion of mine for years. I like to think that the more I do things, the more experienced I become. But sometimes, familiarity breeds complacency.
I had harvested a number of birds over the years, and a friend's farm in Jo Davies county in Illinois, just a couple hours from my home promised another giant turkey. Jo Davies is one of the most successful deer and turkey counties in Illinois. I was looking forward to an easy hunt. I had deer hunted there before and knew the land. Not too steep. Didn't have to …
